Where the heART is!

Primary and Secondary Colors
In this unit we have been exploring the Color Wheel! It's gotten off to a great start, and the kids seem to really be enjoying the lessons thus far.  To begin the unit we discussed colors and their importance. We started off with our primary and secondary colors.  Students used paints to mix primary colors and create secondary colors on their paper.

I demonstrated by making a stripe or dot of paint on my paper.  We first used our primary colors.

Once the students had their stripes of color on their paper, we then used our brush and swirled the two primary colors together creating a secondary color.

The visual, and being able to do it themselves really made a difference in their excitement and their ability to remember which primary colors mixed together made the secondary colors!

We then read the book, A Color of His own, and created our own chameleon using only primary and secondary colors.  The kids loved it and I have some really great work to hang in the hallway!

(I used this template from Kitchen Floor Crafts.)

I did have to keep reminding my students that when we mix lots of colors together we get black or brown. It was important for them to remember that we were just mixing our Primary and Secondary colors.

We used these watercolors

What I really love about this type of watercolor is the ease of cleanup.  (Especially when you have another class coming right in) I just run them under the water quickly and they are good to go for the next class.  You can also pop the cakes in and out, so you can change the colors of the tray quickly and easily.  They are easy to use for the kids as well and they last longer than other watercolors.  It's a win, win!
